About this book

'Only connect' is the motto of this novel about three families in Edwardian England: the cultured, idealistic Schlegel sisters, Margaret and Helen; the wealthy, practical Wilcoxes, who run the world's business; and Leonard Bast, a poor clerk who dreams of culture. Their lives become entangled around a country house called Howards End and the question of who will inherit it.

Context and significance

Published in 1910, Howards End is E. M. Forster's most ambitious novel about class, money and the future of England, and many critics consider it his masterpiece. It was filmed in 1992. For a lighter Forster, read A Room with a View.
