About this book

Lilia Herriton, a lively young English widow, travels to Italy and, to the horror of her stuffy in-laws, marries Gino Carella, the handsome, penniless son of a dentist in a small Tuscan town. When she dies giving birth to a son, the Herritons send her young brother-in-law Philip and his rigid sister Harriet to bring the baby back to England, with the help of Caroline Abbott, who had been Lilia's companion, and the clash of English respectability and Italian life ends in disaster.

Context and significance

E. M. Forster published his first novel in 1905, at twenty-six; its title comes from Alexander Pope's line 'For fools rush in where angels fear to tread'. Read A Room with a View and Howards End.
