About this book

In the Highlands of Scotland in the sixteenth century, a hunter who calls himself James Fitz-James loses his way while chasing a stag near Loch Katrine and is rowed across the lake by the beautiful Ellen Douglas, daughter of an outlawed lord. Three men love her: the young Malcolm Graeme, the fierce Highland chief Roderick Dhu, who sends the fiery cross through the glens to raise his clan, and the mysterious stranger, whose true identity is revealed only at the end. Scott tells the story in six cantos of fast-moving verse, with songs and ballads.

Context and significance

Walter Scott published the poem in 1810, and it was so popular that tourists began to visit Loch Katrine. Its 'Hail to the Chief' became the official music of the President of the United States, and Schubert set Ellen's song as his famous 'Ave Maria'. Scott later turned to prose, beginning with Waverley.
