About this book

Anna Tellwright, the daughter of a rich, miserly Methodist in the pottery town of Bursley, comes into a fortune at twenty-one, but her father still controls her money and her life. As a landlord she is made to press a poor tenant, the struggling manufacturer Titus Price, for his rent, with tragic results, and she is courted by the successful Henry Mynors while she is secretly drawn to Price's gentle, ruined son, Willie.

Context and significance

Arnold Bennett published his first novel of the Potteries in 1902, writing with affection and irony about the narrow, chapel-going world he had left for London, and it created the 'Five Towns' of his later masterpiece, The Old Wives' Tale.
