About this book

In the voice of an imagined Spanish monk, Fray Antonio Agapida, a zealous chronicler, Washington Irving tells the ten-year war, from 1482 to 1492, in which the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella conquered the last Muslim kingdom in Spain: the surprise capture of Alhama, the battles in the mountains, the quarrels within the Nasrid family between the sultan Abu al-Hasan, his brother al-Zaghal and his son Boabdil, the sieges of Málaga and Baza, and finally the surrender of Granada and Boabdil's departure.

Context and significance

Irving published the chronicle in 1829 after studying the archives in Spain, and he chose the voice of the fanatical monk so that, through irony, the cruelty and bigotry of the crusade would speak for themselves. Read it with his The Alhambra, written in the palace itself.
