About this book

Lady Isabel Vane, the beautiful daughter of a ruined earl, marries the honourable lawyer Archibald Carlyle, who has bought her father's estate, East Lynne. Misled by jealousy about her husband's secret meetings with a young neighbour, Barbara Hare, which concern Barbara's brother, falsely accused of murder, she runs away with the seductive Captain Levison, who soon abandons her. Believed dead after a railway accident and disfigured, she returns in disguise as a governess to her own children in her husband's house, where Barbara is now his wife.

Context and significance

Ellen Wood (Mrs Henry Wood, 1814–1887) published the novel in 1861, and it was one of the great best sellers of its time, adapted for the stage again and again. Note that this edition is an abridged version of the long original. It belongs with Braddon's Lady Audley's Secret.
