About this book

Writing in a monastery in the north of England, Bede tells the history of Britain from the Roman invasion to his own day, and above all the story of how the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms became Christian: the mission of Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory in 597, the Irish monks of Iona and Lindisfarne, kings and saints, councils and miracles. It includes the famous image of human life as a sparrow flying through a lighted hall in winter, out of darkness and back into darkness.

Context and significance

Bede (about 673–735), the most learned scholar of his age, finished the book in 731, and he did much to spread the custom of dating events from the birth of Christ. It is the foundation of English history. This translation is by A. M. Sellar. Compare The Confessions of St. Augustine.
