About this book

The descendants of a Protestant family persecuted in the seventeenth century are scattered across the world, each holding a bronze medal that summons them to a house in Paris on 13 February 1832, where an immense fortune, grown over a century and a half, will be divided among those present. A Jesuit, the cunning and patient Rodin, plots to keep them away so that the fortune will pass to his order, while the old soldier Dagobert travels from Siberia with twin orphan girls, an Indian prince arrives from the East, and the legendary Wandering Jew, condemned to walk the earth until the end of time, secretly protects them, as cholera sweeps through Paris.

Context and significance

Eugène Sue (1804–1857) published the novel in newspaper instalments in 1844 and 1845, and it was one of the most popular books of its century, fiercely hostile to the Jesuits. Its sprawling suspense rivals that of The Count of Monte Cristo, and its picture of poverty anticipates Les Misérables.
