About this book

In 1885, during the war between Serbia and Bulgaria, a Swiss mercenary fighting for the Serbs escapes after a battle by climbing into the bedroom of Raina Petkoff, a young Bulgarian woman engaged to Sergius, the dashing hero of the cavalry charge that has just won the day. The fugitive, Captain Bluntschli, carries chocolates instead of bullets in his cartridge box, and his cheerful practicality punctures all Raina's romantic ideas about war and love.

Context and significance

Bernard Shaw's comedy was first performed in 1894, and its title comes from the opening of Virgil's Aeneid, 'Arms and the man I sing'. Its mockery of military glory made it one of his first successes, and it was later turned into the operetta The Chocolate Soldier. Readers who enjoy it often go on to Pygmalion.
