About this book

Conan, the barbarian adventurer who has become king of Aquilonia, is overthrown when his enemies bring back to life Xaltotun, a terrible sorcerer of a vanished empire, using a magic jewel called the Heart of Ahriman. Betrayed and imprisoned, Conan escapes from a dungeon full of horrors and sets out alone across the kingdoms of his world to recover the jewel, the only weapon that can defeat the wizard, from the pirate coasts to the pyramids of Stygia, and to win back his throne.

Context and significance

Robert E. Howard (1906–1936), a Texan writer who died at thirty, created Conan in 1932, and this, serialised in 1935 and 1936, is the only full-length Conan novel he wrote. It is a founding work of 'sword and sorcery' fantasy. Compare the earlier planetary adventures of Burroughs's The Gods of Mars.
