About this book

On the remote Shetland Islands in the early eighteenth century, young Mordaunt Mertoun, who lives with his gloomy father in a ruined house, saves a stranger from a shipwreck: Captain Cleveland, a dashing, mysterious seaman who is, in fact, a pirate. Cleveland wins the heart of Minna Troil, the romantic elder daughter of a rich Shetland landowner, while her sister Brenda loves Mordaunt, and the half-mad sibyl Norna of the Fitful Head, who claims to control the winds, guards a secret that binds them all.

Context and significance

Walter Scott published the novel in 1822, after visiting Shetland and Orkney on a voyage with the lighthouse engineer Robert Stevenson, the grandfather of Robert Louis Stevenson, and he based Cleveland partly on the real pirate John Gow. This edition was prepared by Andrew Lang. Scott's first novel is Waverley, and Stevenson's own pirates are in Treasure Island.
