About this book

'My own mind is my own church.' Written partly while he was imprisoned in Paris during the Terror, The Age of Reason, the centrepiece of this volume, is Thomas Paine's argument for deism: belief in one God, the creator, known through reason and nature rather than through revelation. He examines the Bible book by book, rejecting the authority of priests and miracles, while insisting that he is no atheist and that true religion lies in doing justice and loving mercy.

Context and significance

Published between 1794 and 1796, the book was attacked as blasphemous, cost Paine many friends in America, and sold widely among working people in Britain despite the prosecution of its sellers. This volume of The Writings of Thomas Paine, edited by Moncure Daniel Conway, also contains his other writings of 1794 to 1796. Read Common Sense and Rights of Man.
