About this book

In the title story, Bertha Young, a happy young wife in London, is filled one evening with an inexplicable feeling of bliss as she prepares a dinner party, and sees in a pear tree in flower in her garden a symbol of her own life, until the evening reveals a truth she had not suspected. The collection also includes 'Prelude', a portrait of a family moving house in New Zealand seen through the eyes of a child, 'Je ne parle pas français' and 'The Little Governess'.

Context and significance

Katherine Mansfield published the book in 1920, two years before The Garden Party; 'Prelude' had first been printed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf's Hogarth Press. Compare Chekhov's The Darling.
