About this book

On the windswept Nebraska prairie, a Swedish immigrant farmer dies and leaves his land to his daughter Alexandra, because she understands it better than his sons. While her neighbours and brothers want to give up and move away, Alexandra believes in the land and makes the farm flourish, but success cannot protect the people she loves, and her youngest brother's secret love ends in tragedy.

Context and significance

Published in 1913, O Pioneers! was Willa Cather's first novel of the prairie, and its title comes from a poem by Walt Whitman in Leaves of Grass. Cather wrote about strong, independent women and the immigrant families who settled the plains. Continue with My Ántonia.
