About this book

Nur al-Din Abd al-Rahman Jami, the last great classical poet of Persia, was also a Sufi master of the Naqshbandi order. This small book introduces his life and thought and offers selections from his poetry, above all from Yusuf and Zulaikha, part of his cycle of seven poems, the Haft Awrang, which retells the story of the prophet Joseph and the wife of his Egyptian master as an allegory of the soul's love for God, together with short poems on divine beauty and love.

Context and significance

Jami (1414–1492) lived at the court of Herat, in today's Afghanistan, and wrote in both Persian and Arabic. This edition, by F. Hadland Davis, was published in 1908 in the Wisdom of the East series. Compare The Diwan of Abu'l-Ala and Poems from the Divan of Hafiz.
