About this book

When the Goths sacked Rome in 410, many pagans blamed the disaster on the Christians, who had abandoned the old gods. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo in North Africa, answered them in this vast work. This first volume contains Books I to XIII: he argues that the Roman gods never protected Rome, examines Roman history and the philosophers, especially the Platonists, and then begins his great contrast between two cities, the earthly city founded on love of self and the city of God founded on love of God, telling the story of creation, the angels and the fall of mankind.

Context and significance

Augustine worked on the book from 413 to 426, and it shaped Christian thought about history, politics and the state for a thousand years. This translation was edited by Marcus Dods. Augustine's own story is told in The Confessions of St. Augustine, and the fall of Rome is retold in Gibbon's Decline and Fall.
