About this book

In the title story, four men, a captain injured in a shipwreck, a cook, an oiler and a newspaper correspondent, struggle for thirty hours in a tiny dinghy off the coast of Florida, within sight of the shore but unable to land through the surf. The collection includes other stories of the sea, the American West and Mexico, among them 'The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky'.

Context and significance

Stephen Crane based 'The Open Boat' on his own experience, when the steamer Commodore, carrying arms to Cuban rebels, sank in January 1897 and he survived in a small boat. Published in 1898, it is often called one of the finest short stories in English. Read The Red Badge of Courage and Maggie.
