About this book

Roderick Random, the grandson of a rich Scottish judge, is disowned after his father marries against the family's wishes, and he sets out penniless to seek his fortune, accompanied by his loyal friend Strap, a barber. He is cheated in London, pressed into the navy as a surgeon's mate, survives the horrors of a disastrous attack on Cartagena in South America, serves as a soldier in the French army, and tries to marry an heiress, before chance and his long-lost father change everything.

Context and significance

Tobias Smollett published the novel in 1748, drawing on his own service as a naval surgeon at Cartagena in 1741, and its brutal picture of life at sea shocked readers. Its rough energy delighted the young Charles Dickens, who has David read it in David Copperfield. Smollett's last and mellowest novel is Humphry Clinker.
