About this book

John Carter, a Confederate veteran prospecting for gold in Arizona after the Civil War, takes refuge in a cave from attacking Apaches and finds himself mysteriously carried to Mars, which its people call Barsoom. Thanks to the planet's weaker gravity he has enormous strength and can leap great distances. Captured by the fierce, green, four-armed Tharks, he earns their respect, befriends the warrior Tars Tarkas and falls in love with their captive, Dejah Thoris, princess of the red Martian city of Helium.

Context and significance

Published as a magazine serial in 1912 and as a book in 1917, this was Edgar Rice Burroughs's first novel and the start of a long series of Barsoom adventures that inspired science-fiction writers, scientists and filmmakers for a century. It is pure pulp adventure, written at great speed. Worth reading alongside it: Tarzan of the Apes.
