About this book

Ten years after he was carried back to Earth, John Carter returns to Mars, longing for his wife, the princess Dejah Thoris, but finds himself in the beautiful valley of Dor, the paradise to which Martians make their last pilgrimage. It is a trap: the pilgrims are devoured by monstrous plant men and white apes, and the survivors are enslaved by the Holy Therns, the priests of a false religion. Fighting his way out with his old friend Tars Tarkas, Carter uncovers one secret after another, meets the black pirates who rule above the therns and their goddess Issus, and finds a young warrior who turns out to be his son.

Context and significance

Edgar Rice Burroughs serialised the novel in 1913, as the sequel to A Princess of Mars, and its sword-and-planet adventure inspired later science fiction and films. It ends with a cliffhanger, resolved in the next book of the series.
