About this book

In the decaying hill country of Massachusetts lives the Whateley family: a half-mad old farmer, his albino daughter and her son Wilbur, who grows at an unnatural rate, is nearly a man at ten, and comes to the library of Miskatonic University to consult a forbidden book. When dogs attack him there, the librarian discovers that Wilbur is not entirely human, and that something even larger is hidden in the Whateley farmhouse.

Context and significance

Published in 1929, The Dunwich Horror is one of Lovecraft's most exciting stories. The forbidden book is his invented Necronomicon, which he attributed to an imaginary 'mad Arab' named Abdul Alhazred, a sign of how the East fascinated him. See The Call of Cthulhu.
