About this book

'As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.' Taking this verse from the Book of Proverbs as his title, James Allen argues in seven short chapters that our thoughts shape our character, our circumstances, our health and our achievements. The mind, he says, is like a garden that will grow either flowers or weeds; circumstances do not make a person but reveal him; and calm, purposeful thinking brings strength and serenity.

Context and significance

Allen (1864–1912), an English writer who left business to live simply and write, published the essay in 1903, and it has been one of the most widely read books of self-improvement ever since. It can be read in an hour. Its Stoic ancestors include the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius and the Discourses of Epictetus.
