About this book

King Shahryar, betrayed by his wife, has sworn to marry a new bride every night and kill her at dawn, until Shahrazad, the clever daughter of his vizier, volunteers to marry him and begins a story she leaves unfinished at daybreak. This first of ten volumes contains the opening tales: the merchant and the jinni, the fisherman who finds a jinni in a jar, and the porter and the three ladies of Baghdad, with stories nested inside stories.

Context and significance

Richard Francis Burton (1821–1890) was an explorer and linguist who travelled to Mecca in disguise in 1853 and searched for the source of the Nile. His complete translation, privately printed for subscribers in 1885, is famous for its archaic style and for its long footnotes, which are frank and often reflect the prejudices of his time; it is meant for adult readers. For a shorter selection for young readers, see Andrew Lang's version.
