About this book

In a dark, damp basement lodging house run by a greedy landlord, a group of outcasts live side by side: a thief, a ruined baron, an alcoholic actor, a prostitute, a locksmith whose wife is dying, a card-sharp. Into their bitter lives comes Luka, a gentle old pilgrim who comforts each of them with kind words and hopeful lies, and when he disappears they are left to decide whether truth or illusion is better for human beings.

Context and significance

Maxim Gorky wrote the play in 1902, and Stanislavsky's Moscow Art Theatre production made it famous across Europe; this translation, by Jenny Covan, was made for that company's American tour. Read Gorky's Mother and Chekhov's last plays.
