About this book

This is a selection from the Thousand and One Nights retold for young readers: the frame story of Shahrazad, Aladdin and the wonderful lamp, Ali Baba and the forty thieves, the voyages of Sindbad the sailor, the fisherman and the jinni, the enchanted horse and other tales of magic, merchants and clever servants.

Context and significance

Andrew Lang (1844–1912), a Scottish scholar and folklorist, published it in 1898 alongside his famous coloured fairy books. Interestingly, Aladdin and Ali Baba are not found in the old Arabic manuscripts of the Nights: they were added in the eighteenth century by the French translator Antoine Galland, who heard them from a Syrian storyteller, Hanna Diyab. For the complete text, see Burton's translation.
