About this book

In May 1373, a woman of thirty, believed to be dying, received a series of sixteen visions, or 'showings', of Christ's passion and of God's love. She recovered and spent years meditating on them as an anchoress, living alone in a cell attached to the church of St Julian in Norwich. Her Revelations explore the meaning of sin and suffering with great tenderness: God shows her the whole of creation as a little thing the size of a hazelnut, held in being by love, speaks of God as a mother, and assures her that 'all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well'.

Context and significance

Julian of Norwich (about 1343–after 1416) wrote what is believed to be the first book in English by a woman. This edition, by Grace Warrack, published in 1901, gives the longer version of the text in modernised English. Compare the gentler practical spirituality of Brother Lawrence's The Practice of the Presence of God.
