About this book

Jurgis Rudkus, a strong young Lithuanian immigrant, arrives in Chicago with his family full of hope and finds work in the meatpacking plants of Packingtown. The work is brutal and dangerous, the bosses cheat them, their house is a swindle, and one by one the family is broken by injury, disease and poverty, until Jurgis discovers the socialist movement.

Context and significance

Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) wrote the novel after weeks undercover in the stockyards, and its descriptions of filth in the meat plants caused such outrage that Congress passed food safety laws in 1906. Sinclair said he aimed at the public's heart and by accident hit it in the stomach. It is a harrowing book, and an important one.
