About this book

In January 1776, more than a year after fighting had begun between Britain and its American colonies, most colonists still hoped for reconciliation with the king. This short pamphlet argued, in plain and forceful language that any farmer or artisan could follow, that monarchy and hereditary rule were absurd, that an island could not govern a continent, and that independence was the only sensible course.

Context and significance

Thomas Paine (1737–1809) had arrived in America from England only in 1774, with a letter of recommendation from Benjamin Franklin. Common Sense sold in enormous numbers and helped prepare the way for the Declaration of Independence that July. Paine later defended the French Revolution in Rights of Man. Compare Locke's Second Treatise.
