About this book

Silas Lapham, a rough, honest Vermont farm boy who has made a fortune from a mineral paint found on his father's land, wants to rise in Boston society, and begins building a grand house in the fashionable Back Bay. His family becomes entangled with the Coreys, an old, cultured and impoverished Boston family, whose son Tom seems to be courting the pretty younger Lapham daughter, Irene, but in fact loves the plain, witty elder one, Penelope. Meanwhile a business deal tests Lapham's conscience.

Context and significance

William Dean Howells (1837–1920), editor of The Atlantic Monthly and the great champion of American realism, published the novel in 1885, and its story of a self-made man's moral test is his best-known book. Compare Trollope's The Way We Live Now.
