About this book

Charity Royall, an orphan brought down as a child from a poor, lawless community on the mountain above the village, lives in the small, dull New England town of North Dormer with her guardian, the lonely lawyer Mr Royall. One summer a young architect from the city, Lucius Harney, comes to study the old houses of the region, and Charity falls passionately in love with him, in a summer that will change her life.

Context and significance

Edith Wharton published the novel in 1917 and called it her 'hot Ethan', because it is set in the same New England landscape as Ethan Frome, but in summer and with a heroine awakening to love; its frankness about desire was daring for its time. Read also The Age of Innocence.
