About this book

In London, the beautiful, mysterious Countess Narona, a woman with a doubtful reputation, marries Lord Montbarry, who has broken off his engagement to a gentle Irish girl, Agnes, for her sake. Months later Montbarry dies in an old palace in Venice, insured for a large sum, and his English servant vanishes. When the palace becomes a hotel, members of the Montbarry family who stay there suffer strange nightmares, and Agnes is drawn to Venice to discover the truth.

Context and significance

Wilkie Collins published the short novel in 1878, mixing a ghost story with a detective puzzle. Read Collins's The Woman in White and The Moonstone.
