About this book

Father Brown is a short, shabby Catholic priest with a big umbrella and a round, harmless face, and no one expects him to solve anything. Yet in these twelve stories he outwits the master thief Flambeau, explains an impossible murder in a locked garden and sees the truth that clever detectives miss, because, as he says, his work in the confessional has taught him what people are capable of.

Context and significance

Published in 1911, this was the first of G. K. Chesterton's five collections of Father Brown stories, which are as much about faith, pride and human nature as about crime. The friendship that grows between the priest and the reformed thief Flambeau is one of their pleasures. Readers who enjoy it often go on to Chesterton's novel The Man Who Was Thursday.
