About this book

Sixteen years after the death of Ayesha in the flames of the Pillar of Life, Horace Holly and Leo Vincey travel into Central Asia, following a vision that promised she would return. Crossing the mountains of Tibet, they reach a hidden kingdom ruled by a jealous Khania, who desires Leo, and at last a temple on a fiery mountain, where a mysterious veiled priestess waits for him, in a story of love stronger than death.

Context and significance

H. Rider Haggard published this sequel to She in 1905; like the first book, it is presented as Holly's own manuscript, sent before his death to the editor who had published the earlier story. Readers who enjoy it often go on to King Solomon's Mines and Allan Quatermain.
