About this book

The Gesta Romanorum, 'Deeds of the Romans', is a medieval collection of tales in Latin, each followed by a Christian moral: stories of emperors, knights, princesses and saints, many set in an imaginary Rome, of clever tricks, magic rings, faithful animals and wicked stepmothers. Among them are early versions of the story of the three caskets that Shakespeare used in The Merchant of Venice and of the tale of a king and his three daughters behind King Lear.

Context and significance

Compiled, probably in England, around 1300 to give preachers examples for their sermons, the collection was one of the most popular books of the Middle Ages and a storehouse of plots for Chaucer, Boccaccio, Shakespeare and later writers. This translation is by Charles Swan. Read The Merchant of Venice and King Lear.
