About this book

This first volume of Mozart's letters begins in 1769, when the thirteen-year-old prodigy toured Italy with his father, Leopold, and wrote home in high spirits about operas, concerts and the people he met. It follows him through his journeys to Munich, Mannheim and Paris, where his mother died in 1778, his hopeless love for the singer Aloysia Weber, his frustrations in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg and his decisive break with him in 1781, when he settled in Vienna as an independent musician.

Context and significance

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) wrote with humour, affection and sometimes startling frankness, and the letters show a real person behind the legend. This translation is by Lady Wallace. For the autobiography of another great composer of opera, read Wagner's My Life.
