About this book

The small, round-faced Catholic priest with the shabby umbrella returns in twelve new mysteries, solving crimes not with science or fingerprints but with his deep understanding of human nature and sin. Among them are 'The Absence of Mr Glass', in which he gently deflates a famous criminologist; 'The Paradise of Thieves', set among Italian brigands; and 'The Duel of Dr Hirsch', with his friend Flambeau, the former master thief, at his side.

Context and significance

Published in 1914, this is G. K. Chesterton's second collection of Father Brown stories, after The Innocence of Father Brown. Chesterton based the priest partly on a real friend, Father John O'Connor, and the stories remain among the most original in detective fiction. From here, try Orthodoxy.
