About this book

Diamond, the young son of a coachman in London, sleeps in a hayloft above the stables, and one night the North Wind, in the shape of a beautiful woman with long flowing hair, comes in through a hole in the wall and carries him on journeys through the night sky. She can be gentle or terrible, sinking a ship as well as saving people, and at last she takes the sick boy to the mysterious country at her back. In between, Diamond lives a hard, cheerful life in the London streets, helping his family and a crossing-sweeper girl called Nanny.

Context and significance

George MacDonald (1824–1905), a Scottish minister and writer, encouraged his friend Lewis Carroll to publish Alice and was a great influence on C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Published in 1871, this is a strange, tender book about goodness, death and hope. For more in the same vein, read his The Princess and the Goblin.
