About this book

This selection, published in 1923, gathers poems from Robert Frost's first three books, A Boy's Will, North of Boston and Mountain Interval. Here are some of the best-known poems in American literature: 'The Road Not Taken', about two roads diverging in a yellow wood; 'Mending Wall', with its neighbour who insists that 'good fences make good neighbors'; 'Birches', 'After Apple-Picking', the dramatic dialogues 'The Death of the Hired Man' and 'Home Burial', and the terrible farm accident of 'Out, Out—'.

Context and significance

Frost (1874–1963) used the plain speech and rhythms of New England country people to write poems that look simple and turn out to be deep and often dark; he won the Pulitzer Prize four times. Two of the books from which these poems come are also in the library: A Boy's Will and North of Boston.
