About this book

This history tells the story of Jerusalem from the age of Herod and the Roman siege of AD 70 to the end of the Crusades: the city under Romans and Byzantines; its surrender to the Caliph Umar in 638 and the building of the Dome of the Rock; its capture by the Crusaders in 1099 and the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem; and its recovery by Saladin in 1187, together with the history of its holy places and buildings.

Context and significance

Walter Besant (1836–1901) wrote the book with the Arabist Edward Henry Palmer (1840–1882), both connected with the Palestine Exploration Fund, and first published it in 1871; Palmer was killed in Sinai in 1882 while on a mission for the British government. Read Scott's The Talisman and Lessing's Nathan the Wise.
