About this book

Jim Burden, orphaned at ten, travels west by train to live with his grandparents on the Nebraska prairie. On the same train is a family of Bohemian immigrants, and their daughter Ántonia becomes his companion in the vast, windy grassland: they learn English together, kill a rattlesnake and live through a winter in which her father, homesick for the old country, takes his own life.

Context and significance

Willa Cather (1873–1947) moved to Nebraska as a child and drew on the immigrant families she knew there. Published in 1918, My Ántonia is a novel of memory, friendship and the land, and one of the great American books about immigrants. Read it with O Pioneers!.
