About this book

Francis Bacon dedicated this book to King James I as a survey of human knowledge and a plan for its improvement. In the first part he defends learning against those who say it makes men unfit for business or leads them away from religion, while admitting the faults of scholars: fantastical learning, quarrelsome learning and learning that cares only for words. In the second part he maps the whole field of knowledge, divided by the faculties of the mind into history (memory), poetry (imagination) and philosophy (reason), and points out where knowledge is lacking and new work is needed.

Context and significance

Bacon (1561–1626) published the book in 1605, and it prepared the way for his Novum Organum, with its new method of science, and for his scientific utopia, the New Atlantis. This edition was edited by Henry Morley.
