About this book

The people of the little kingdom of Erl ask their lord to let them be ruled by a magic lord, so he sends his son Alveric beyond 'the fields we know' into Elfland, with a magic sword, to win the hand of Lirazel, the daughter of the King of Elfland. Alveric brings her home and they have a son, Orion, but Lirazel can never understand the ways of mortal men, and when her father sends a rune to call her back she drifts home to Elfland, and Alveric spends years wandering in search of a land that has moved away from him.

Context and significance

Lord Dunsany (1878–1957), an Anglo-Irish aristocrat, playwright and chess player, published the novel in 1924, and its dreamy, musical prose made it one of the most influential works of modern fantasy, admired by writers from Lovecraft to Neil Gaiman. It entered the public domain in the United States in 2020. Compare The Worm Ouroboros.
