About this book

Brother Lawrence, a humble lay brother who worked for years in the kitchen of a Carmelite monastery in Paris, explains in conversations and letters his simple way of life with God. He did not find God more in church than in his kitchen, he says: whether cooking, washing pots or repairing sandals, he kept himself constantly aware of God's presence, speaking to him as a friend, and when he failed he simply turned back without anxiety. Prayer, for him, was not a special exercise but the habit of a whole day.

Context and significance

Brother Lawrence (about 1614–1691), born Nicolas Herman, had been a soldier and a footman before entering the monastery; his conversations and letters were gathered after his death by Abbé Joseph de Beaufort. The little book has been loved by readers of many Christian traditions. Compare Revelations of Divine Love by Julian of Norwich and The Imitation of Christ.
