About this book

In these short, wicked comic stories, animals often take their revenge on humans and children outwit adults: 'The Open Window', in which a self-possessed girl of fifteen tells a nervous visitor a ghost story about the family's missing men; 'The Lumber-Room', about a boy who escapes his aunt's punishment; and tales of a boar-pig that besieges a garden party and of a supposed werewolf at a country house.

Context and significance

Saki published the collection in 1914, two years before he was killed in the war, and 'The Open Window' is one of the most anthologised short stories in English. Read The Chronicles of Clovis.
