About this book

In two parts, G. K. Chesterton answers H. G. Wells's account of history as a story of gradual evolution. The first, 'The Creature Called Man', argues that human beings, from the cave painters onward, are radically different from other animals, and surveys the myths, religions and philosophies of the pagan world. The second, 'The Man Called Christ', argues that the story of Christ is unique among the world's religions, and that Christianity has repeatedly been declared dead and has always returned.

Context and significance

Published in 1925, the book had a great influence on C. S. Lewis, who said it helped bring him to faith. It is a lively, paradoxical defence of Christianity. Read Chesterton's Orthodoxy.
