About this book

Starting from the fantasies and poems of a young American woman known as Miss Miller, Carl Gustav Jung follows the images of the unconscious mind through the myths and religions of the world: the hero's journey, the sun god, sacrifice, the mother and rebirth. He argues that libido is not only sexual energy, as Freud held, but a general psychic energy, and that myths express patterns shared by all humanity.

Context and significance

Published in German in 1912 as Transformations and Symbols of the Libido, the book brought about Jung's break with Freud, his former mentor. This English translation of 1916 is by Beatrice M. Hinkle. Read Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams and Dream Psychology.
