About this book

In the autumn of 1773, James Boswell, a young Scottish lawyer, persuaded Samuel Johnson, then sixty-four and famous for his Dictionary, to travel with him through the Highlands and the Western Isles of Scotland. For about three months they rode, sailed and walked through rain and storms to Skye, Raasay, Coll, Mull and Iona, staying with lairds and ministers and meeting Flora MacDonald, who had helped Bonnie Prince Charlie escape. Boswell records everything Johnson said, his opinions, jokes, quarrels and kindnesses.

Context and significance

Boswell published the journal in 1785, a year after Johnson's death, as a first trial of the method he perfected in his great Life of Johnson six years later. Johnson wrote his own account, A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Read Johnson's Rasselas.
