About this book

Evelina Anville, a beautiful, sheltered girl of seventeen raised by a kind country clergyman, is unacknowledged by her aristocratic father. On her first visit to London she makes every possible social mistake at balls, theatres and pleasure gardens, is mortified by her vulgar grandmother, Madame Duval, and her cousins, the Branghtons, and is pursued by the rakish Sir Clement Willoughby, while she falls in love with the perfect gentleman, Lord Orville. She tells it all in letters to her guardian.

Context and significance

Fanny Burney (1752–1840) published the novel anonymously in 1778, and it was a sensation; when she was revealed as the author, Samuel Johnson became her friend. Its comedy of manners, seen through a young woman's eyes, prepared the way for Jane Austen, who admired her. Read Pride and Prejudice.
