About this book

How did Islam spread across the world? In this history, the British scholar Thomas Walker Arnold argues, against the common European view of his time, that Islam spread far more through peaceful preaching, trade, the example of believers and the work of missionaries, Sufis and scholars than through the sword. He follows its growth region by region, in Western Asia, Africa, Spain, Persia and Central Asia, among the Mongols and the Turks, in India, China and the Malay Archipelago, drawing on a wide range of Arabic, Persian and European sources.

Context and significance

Arnold (1864–1930) taught for ten years at the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh in India, and later in Lahore, where the young Muhammad Iqbal was his student and friend. He first published the book in 1896, and it remains a pioneering, much-cited study. Compare Hayy ibn Yaqzan.
