About this book

Aubrey, a romantic young Englishman, travels across Europe with the mysterious Lord Ruthven, a pale nobleman who fascinates London society and seems to bring ruin to everyone he favours. In Greece a girl Aubrey loves is killed by a vampire; soon after, Ruthven is mortally wounded and makes Aubrey swear to keep silent about him for a year. Back in London, Aubrey sees him again.

Context and significance

The story was born in 1816 at the Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva, in the same ghost-story contest that produced Frankenstein. John William Polidori (1795–1821), Byron's young doctor, developed it from a fragment by Byron, and it was first published in 1819 under Byron's name by mistake. It created the aristocratic vampire that led to Dracula.
